Purchase criteria: These factors allow you to compare and rate ski masks
To make it easier for you to compare ski masks, in this section we have compiled the most important criteria for your selection and briefly explained them.
In summary, these are the following criteria:
- size
- material
- colour
- breathability
- cold Weather
Below you can read what the specific criteria are and why it makes sense for you to acquire a particualr type based on the criteria or not.
Size of Mask for Skiing
The material of the ski hood is very elastic, which is why often unit sizes are offered. If different sizes are available, there is usually an indication of the classification and measurement in the product description. The sizes may vary from provider to provider.
In the information we have provided you with more information on how to find out your required size. Various ski masks have a Velcro closure, which allows individual adjustments to the head.
Material the Ski Mask is Made
The material of the ski mask is basically very thin so that it can be worn under a helmet . Most ski hoods are made of polyester or micro-fleece to create windproof yet breathable and quick-drying.
Micro fleece also ensures a balanced thermal climate. Wool, neoprene and mixed fibers are other alternative materials. Ski masks made of wool are generally suitable for all seasons, but these usually only serve the purpose of protecting your face from wind and cold.
So if you value breathability, as well as a quick-drying effect, consider other materials. Neoprene ski masks are not only windproof and provide snow and cold protection, but also have a thermal function. A good balaclava should fit the respective temperature range!
Depending on the purpose, there is a suitable material. In the table you can find the properties of the mentioned materials. In addition, we briefly describe the different materials:

Ski Mask Colour
Ski hoods are available in different shapes and colours, but this has no deeper meaning. The colour of the ski mask is purely a matter of taste and allows you to completely harmonize your ski outfit.
Some products have additional reflectors to be seen in bad weather and darkness anyway. It’s an important feature that gives you extra protection. If your dream facial mask does not have reflectors, but you’d like some, you can still attach them yourself.
Adhesive reflectors for textiles you will find for little money in various shops such as amazon.de. Here we have linked the page for your purchase.
Breathability
Breathability is an important feature of the functionality of outdoor clothing. This generally means the air permeability or water vapour permeability of textiles.
Yes, anyone who does sports sweats. That’s why breathability is so important. Otherwise, the heat between your body and clothes or the sweat cools uncomfortable.
In the case of a ski mask, this effect is mainly produced by inhaling and inhaling. The clothing should make it possible to direct the resulting moisture from the skin to the outside.
Lightweight synthetic fibres such as polyester, polyamide, poly-acrylic or polypropylene quickly pull the sweat away from the body, allowing the moisture to wick and dry quickly.
For wool, merino wool is always a good choice. Like light synthetic fibres, moisture absorbs, dissipates it away from the body and dries quickly. Another advantage is the soft material and the odour inhibiting effect.
Cold Weather
Who likes to do a lot of outdoor sports knows: There is no wrong weather, only wrong clothes. Over the head most of the heat is lost. You should not compromise here.
A good tip for you: Make sure that as much of your face and neck as possible is covered.
The right materials for processing play an important role in cold protection. If you value a thermo function, consider neoprene masks.
Further Information on Mask for Skiing
Especially in the high mountains skiing is much fun, but the higher the slopes are, the more icy the wind is. If you want to protect yourself from the wind and the icy wind during the descent, you can buy a ski mask. Many of the ski masks are made from modern art fabric, as discussed in the materials section above, and it covers the entire face. In the end, only the eyes remain open for the masks.
If possible, the ski masks should fit snugly and then they can be worn under a ski helmet without any problems. Nowadays there is a wide selection of beautiful ski masks and these are available in many bright colours. Ski masks can cover the head all around and often reach down to the shoulders. These models can protect very well from weather and wind. So if you are on the slopes or planning a ski tour, you should always have snow on your face and the cold wind. After some time, this can be very uncomfortable. Unfortunately helmet and cap can not always provide a remedy. Therefore something was developed by the manufacturers, which reminds of the balaclava. The ski mask ensures that the area around the mouth, nose and eyes is protected from the cold.
Within the ski mask, the material is generally very thin and it is still ensured that no cold passes through. The goal of the mask is to keep the cold away from the sensitive skin on the face. Very often micro-fleece and polyester are used. Of course, this is windproof, but at the same time still breathable.
If you want an alternative, you can also use the models made of certain mixed fibres or wool. Important in the ski mask is that eyes remain open mouth and nose. In the ski mask, there is therefore the nostril, which makes breathing easier. In addition, usually the corresponding hole in the mouth is available. The ski mask is usually worn under the ski helmet or even under a cap. Due to the thin fabric, there is no disadvantage, because no one is restricted by the ski mask.
There are in the ski mask generally different shapes and colours, which should be considered in the purchase. Everyone can also do without the openings in the nose and mouth, but then the air exchange is impaired. The durable material can provide very valuable services. In the ski mask, the material is stretchy and for this reason usually one size is found. Everyone can buy a simple ski mask and there are also the models, which are secured with the Velcro. The Velcro makes it possible for the ski masks to be better adapted to the head. By a ski mask, there is of course another important advantage and the size or length of the neck area is also protected from the wet and cold. This is the case because the fabric is correspondingly long in the mask.
Apart from the scarf, everyone has so much more possibility that he warms up. Especially with the tours in cold climes, one is quickly grateful, if one has bought a ski mask. Incidentally, the ski mask is also referred to as hat hate, hat, storm mask or balaclava. The neck and the entire head is covered by the mask and where in most versions the mouth and eyes remain free, with rare designs there is also the possibility that only the eyes are free.
